Criminal groups, the report says, are underpaying producers, trading in Italian counterfeit food products, and overcharging consumers.

Specifically, the president of Italy's largest farmers' group claims that the mafia is passing off olive oil and cheese as "made in Italy," when the product actually comes from cheaper, imported raw materials. It's almost as scandalous as the crazy truffle market.

MILAN – Organized crime in Italy controls agricultural and food businesses worth 12.5-billion euros (US$16-billion) a year, or 5.6% of all criminal operations in the country, according to a parliamentary investigation presented on Thursday.

Organized crime has spread its involvement through the entire food chain from acquisition of farmland to production, from transport to supermarkets, Italy’s biggest farmers group, Coldiretti, said in a statement.

“Italians find an additional invitee at their table: criminal organizations that eat up what Italians should have eaten,” Coldiretti quoted Italy’s chief anti-mafia prosecutor Pietro Grasso as saying on the sidelines of the presentation.

Mafia-like criminal groups often dictate producer and consumer prices in their own favour by undercutting prices paid to farmers for their products and inflating prices paid by consumers in food stores, Coldiretti said. Its findings were used in the investigation by a parliamentary commission.

Italy’s total agricultural and food processing industry is estimated at 300-billion euros per year, not including farmland sales, transport or retail parts of the food trade.

The Italian agriculture and food industry also suffer from the manufacture and sale each year of an estimated 60-billion euros worth of poor quality foreign food that masquerades as top-quality Italian brands ranging from cheese to ham to wine, Coldiretti said.

On Tuesday, Nicodermo S. Scarfo, a made man within the Lucchese organized crime family, was arrested at his home. He's one of13 men chargedwith the illegal takeover of the publicly traded company, among other racketeering charges. "The defendants gave new meaning to 'corporate takeover,' " said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

"Criminal activities have evolved from the back alleys to the board rooms," said Michael B. Ward, special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark Field Office. Still, the tactics remain the same, he says: "physical threats and intimidation to gain leverage and loot lucrative businesses."

Scarfo is not the only one of the 13 with ties to organized crime. Salvatore Pelullo, an associate of the Lucchese and Philadephia La Cosa Nostra families is also charged, as are Nicodermo D. Scarfo (Scarfo Sr.), the imprisoned former boss of the Philadelphia family of La Cosa Nostra, and Vittorio Amuso, the imprisoned boss of the Lucchese family. Others charged include an accountant and five lawyers.

According to an indictment unsealed on Tuesday, the men used both physical and finance threats to take control of FirstPlus in order to plunder the company for their own financial gain. Scarfo, Pelullo and their partners replaced the company's board of directors with their own cronies, and then named their accomplice, lawyer William Maxwell, as special counsel to FirstPlus so that Maxwell could use that position's authority to funnel millions back to the mobsters.

Professing his innocence and blaming a vast government conspiracy, self-described “attorney for the damned” Edgar Steele was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years in federal prison for a foiled murder-for-hire plot that targeted his wife and mother-in-law with a car bomb.

In an hour-and-a-half rant before U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill in Coeur d’Alene, Steele called the case a conspiracy by the federal government, anti-hate groups and the Russian mafia to silence him for his political views and legal work.

“I, too, am a victim. My entire family is a victim. In fact, all of American society is a victim in this case,” said Steele, 66, who defended Aryan Nations founder Richard Butler in the 2000 landmark civil case that bankrupted the racist group. He also authored a book, “Defensive Racism,” and wrote essays on a website, ConspiracyPenPal.com, from his home near Shepherd Lake, southeast of Sandpoint.

“I am not delusional. I am a well-educated professional with a long track record of honesty,” Steele said, wearing a gray sweatshirt and orange jail pants. He vowed to continue fighting to prove his innocence.

Callipo's refusal to play ball with the mob in an area where organised crime forces many businesses to pay extortion money and even dictates which suppliers companies must use has made him somewhat of a local legend.

But it also means he makes the sign of the cross when he leaves home. It is a silent prayer that he will return each day from overseeing four businesses that provide 350 jobs in a region that has one of Italy's highest unemployment rates.

"Sure I'm afraid. Only an imbecile wouldn't be," said Callipo, who drives his own car and has no bodyguards. "But I am a fatalist. If they want to get you they will. It would be so easy in my case," he said in the offices of Callipo Tuna.

The company, which had revenues of about 40 million euros in 2010, sells high-quality tuna to supermarkets and up-market, gourmet specialty shops the world over.

The Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Intermediate People's Court handed down the sentences to Liu Wanliang and Yang Zhengliang for their crimes, which included commandeering a private owned manganese mine, organizing and leading a criminal gang, murder, racketeering, sheltering criminals and pandering.
The court also sentenced four of the gang's members to life imprisonment and 23 other gang members to jail terms from two to 20 years.
According to the court, Liu and his gang reaped significant profits from a privately-owned mine that they seized in 2006. Over the following year, Liu illegally purchased two firearms, bringing his personal collection to eight weapons, the court said. Liu used his firearms to kill one person and injure five others, according to the court.

Madrid (CNN) -- Police in Barcelona have arrested 39 members of a suspected Chinese mafia and freed 30 young Chinese women whom they allegedly forced into prostitution, a senior officer of the Catalan regional police told CNN Wednesday.

The arrests occurred earlier this week after a long investigation. It was the biggest strike to date against Chinese-run mafias involved in forced prostitution in the northeast region of Catalonia, whose capital is Barcelona, said the senior officer, Xavier Cortes, head of the Catalan police unit that fights human trafficking.

In recent years, the Chinese crime syndicate had crowded out others from the prostitution market in the fashionable Eixample district of Barcelona by using forced prostitution and charging below-market rates, Cortes said.

The women were forced to work in unsanitary conditions and in marathon sessions, seeing eight clients in a row for an hour each, he said.

After initial arraignments, a judge ordered 33 of the suspects to remain in prison. Six others were released but remain under investigation, and must check in regularly with authorities, Cortes said.

A Franklin County grand jury has handed down indictments against 24 people following an investigation into organized crime.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says "Operation Maverick," which was launched in March, targeted the importation and trafficking of prescription medication in the county.

The sheriff's office says the investigation revealed many people traveled to Florida to obtain Percocet and other controlled drugs.

Investigators say those suspects were financed by others, and large amounts of drugs were transported from Florida to Franklin County, where the drugs were then sold illegally.

"If you're going to deal drugs here, we are going to arrest you," Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said. "That is the bottom line of this operation, and that's the story here. We have tens of thousands of pills coming into our community from Florida by people going down there to the doctor and paying cash."

A federal judge who last week upheld most of Alabama's immigration law benefited from organized crime in the state's domestic-relations courts, according to a lawsuit filed four years ago.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn held that key provisions in the Alabama immigration law are constitutional, making it the strictest such measure in the nation. But a 2007 federal lawsuit alleges that Blackburn was the beneficiary of unconstitutional actions by certain judges and lawyers in an Alabama divorce court. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that a hunting club in central Alabama was the focal point of an organized crime ring that fixed divorce cases in order to benefit Blackburn and other favored parties--and their lawyers.

A specially appointed federal judge from Georgia dismissed the lawsuit on technical grounds in March 2008. But U.S. District Judge B. Avant Edenfield found that a key argument in the lawsuit "obviously was not frivolous." And for the purposes of his ruling, Edenfield states, the court was required to find many of the alleged facts as true.

A sniper fired the fatal shots from the same adjacent "immense wooded area" mentioned in the listing for Vito's home, which is touted as being "perfect for both raising a family and entertaining."

The mansion is registered in the name of Giovanna Cammalleri, Vito's wife. The pair are to be reunited next year when the 65-year-old mob boss wraps up a prison term for a 1981 mob hit in Brooklyn.

Reputed leader of Mafia sought FBI protection

Mark Rossetti, a reputed leader in the New England Mafia and an FBI informant, thought he would be protected by the bureau after his alleged crime ring was targeted by State Police investigators, according to documents filed in Suffolk Superior Court.

And, according to taped conversations contained in the court documents, Rossetti’s FBI handler told him not to worry, that “my job is to keep you anonymous and keep you safe.’’

“You don’t have anything to worry about if things down the road happen, but if that happens, we’ll have to deal with it as it comes,’’ the handler told Rossetti. “I will have to start working it out.’’

Officials Deny Misconduct in Sex-Trafficking Inquiry

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have sharply criticized a defense lawyer’s claim that the government engaged in misconduct by allowing a cooperating witness in a Mafia case to run a sex- trafficking ring that involved a 15-year-old girl.

The government said it ended the operation as soon as it discovered that the under-age girl was involved. The witness, who was participating in an investigation of the Gambino crime family, learned of the prostitution ring in June 2009 and reported it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, prosecutors said. The witness was then authorized to participate in the trafficking activity for investigative purposes.

Mexican authorities captured a legendary Texan on Monday who is accused of a bloody climb to the top echelon of one of the hemisphere's most powerful drug cartels.

Edgar Valdez Villarreal, known as "La Barbie" for his looks, faces a slew of charges in Mexico, but also is wanted in the United States, where he has been indicted for smuggling thousands of pounds of cocaine into this country.

The U.S. government has offered a reward of up to $2 million for his capture.

In an interview with the Houston Chronicle late Monday, a Houston lawyer representing Valdez, 37, said he fears his client will be tortured or worse before he can be returned to the United States for trial.

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Human rights groups say the war on drugs in Mexico has gone badly awry with soldiers covering up atrocities that have included civilian deaths.

The defense ministry says it still looking into the case of the Almanza family, in which eight adults and five children were driving to the beach on April 3, a drive that ended with soldiers opening fire on the vehicle, leaving two small children dead, The Arizona Republic reported Sunday.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have demanded the case be turned over to civilian authorities. Mexico's National Human Rights Commission has already issued a scathing 1,400-page report accusing soldiers of "manipulations to misdirect the investigations," to avoid blame in the affair.

A drug gang is suspected of massacring 72 migrants and a prosecutor investigating those deaths suddenly disappears. Mexico’s drug cartels seem to be adopting the tactics of war zones half a world away.

The violence has contributed to fewer migrants crossing the border into America, officials say, because they have to traverse some of Mexico’s most dangerous territory to get to Texas. Mexican officials, meanwhile, warn there will likely be more bloodshed in the coming months.

“Violence will persist and even intensify,” said President Felipe Calderon at a forum on security, where he promised he would not back down.

The two car explosions happened early on Friday, less than 45 minutes apart, in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the northern state of Tamaulipas, near where the slaughtered migrants were found.

The first happened in front of the offices of the Televisa network and the second in front of transit police offices. The network described the explosion as a car bomb, but the state attorney general’s office could not confirm that.

If the explosions were car bombs, it would mean a total of four so far this year in Mexico – a new and frightening tactic that officials say the cartels are using in the escalating drug war.

'Ndrangheta Mafia Explodes Bomb at Top Prosecutor's Home in Calabria

The ’Ndrangheta mafia of Calabria planted a bomb in the doorway of the building where the region’s top prosecutor lives, the second bomb attack aimed at prosecutors there this year.

In January, a woman wearing high heels drove a scooter and helped a man plant an explosive at the courthouse entrance, according to a surveillance video. Salvatore Di Landro, the prosecutor targed by today’s bomb, blamed organized crime for the attack.

The FBI Department of Labor arrested Nick and Paul Maddalone on suspicion of extorting Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Workers Union. According to the indictment, the Genovese family "influenced and asserted control over Local 1181."
Prosecutors say that the Local 1181 represents about 15,000 bus drivers who work for companies that contract with the Department of Education to provide school bus transportation in New York City.
From the 1980s through 2006, the Maddalones worked with Mafia contacts to intimidate bus company owners and operators out of tens of thousands of dollars, prosecutors say.
For example, Salvatore Battaglia aka "Hotdogs," a Mafia soldier who was sentenced 57 years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering in 2008, served as local chapter president from 2002 to 2006, prosecutors say.
Julius Bernstein aka "Spike," another "made" mafioso who died shortly after pleading guilty to similar charges, once served as the chapter's Secretary Treasurer.
And the local chapter's Director of Pension and Welfare Anne Chiarovano pleaded guilty in January 2007 to obstructing an FBI investigation.
If convicted, the Maddalones face up to 20 years in prison on each of two extortion counts. They face two additional counts under the Taft-Hartley Act - conspiracy to receive labor payments and unlawful labor payments.

Outcry as 'sad' Mafia boss freed

An Italian senator has demanded the government intervene after a convicted Mafia boss was freed from jail because he was suffering from depression.

Anti-Mafia Commission member Carlo Vizzini called the release of Giacomo Ieni into house arrest "scandalous".

Ieni had been sentenced to eight years for racketeering, but broke down in tears in front of his parole board, saying he could not take jail any more.

The board ruled that detaining him in hospital would endanger his health.

Being with his family was "indispensable" to Ieni's well-being, it said, adding that it hoped "the affection of his family will help him recover".

'Insult'

The ruling by the tribunal in Catania, in eastern Sicily, infuriated prosecutors and politicians alike, who said Ieni was a danger to society.

Naples Mafia drives priest out of city

The local Mafia in Naples has forced a priest who preached against crime to quit the city.

The Camorra, which masterminds a significant part of Europe's cocaine trade, threatened to kill Father Luigi Merola if he did not leave.

The final warning came in the form of a photograph of the priest with a bullet entering his mouth. Father Merola was in charge of the parish of Forcella, a violent neighbourhood in the heart of the city which is controlled by the crime gang. He has had a police escort for the past three years and last week, a 30-year-old man was shot just outside the priest's church.

Although he was popular in the area for his fight against organised crime, the local curia finally decided that it was too dangerous for Father Merola to remain.

He has been given a job at the Italian Bishops' Conference in Rome.

In his final Mass a few weeks ago, Father Merola told worshippers that criminals could not stop "spring" from arriving in Naples and it would be "a season of peace".

Father Merola said he was not being forced out by fear. He said he reached the decision with Cardinal Sepe, the Archbishop of Naples.

"One phase is closed, a new one begins," he said. "But I will continue to fight against crime." Meanwhile, in Palermo, four shopkeepers won a battle against two Mafia dons demanding protection money.

The CIA declassified hundreds of pages of long-secret records that detail some of the agency's worst illegal abuses during about 25 years of overseas assassination attempts, domestic spying and kidnapping.

The documents are known in the CIA as the "Family Jewels," and some describe the agency's efforts to persuade Johnny Roselli, believed to be a mobster, to help plot the assassination of Castro.

A CIA official at the time, Richard Bissell, in August 1960 approached Col. Sheffield Edwards of the Office of Security to determine if Edwards "had assets that may assist in a sensitive mission requiring gangster-type action," according to the documents.

"The mission target was Fidel Castro," one memo said.

Police said they received a tip that high-ranking mafia members were meeting at Club Movida on East Mitchell Street.

Officers raided the club and arrested the suspected mafia members.

Among the arrested were James Jimenez, 39, and Christina Oviedo, 32, who are being held on charges of cocaine possession.

Officers also arrested Carlos Ybarra, 31, on accusations of possessing a weapon.

Police said the arrests send a strong message to the mafia.

"Several arrests were made," Sgt. Gabe Trevino said. "We found some weapons and we were able to gain a lot of intelligence about who's involved in some of these gangs.

Trevino said gathering the intelligence may help lead to more arrests.
